How To Use A Tank Sprayer

How To Use A Tank Sprayer

Step 1. Examine your sprayer

Before you proceed with garden work, it’s important to give your sprayer a quick check. Look for cracks or holes on the body so you can make instant repairs before you add your solution. Fill it with water, wipe down the exterior surface, and check if water leaks through. Then, pressurize your garden sprayer to check if it can maintain pressure. Spray a good amount of water to see if it’s operational or if it needs replacement.

Step 2. Mix the solution

Once you’ve ensured that your sprayer is functioning properly, you’re ready to mix your spraying solution. Check the product label of the chemical you want to use to see the ideal ratio for mixing. Gently pour the liquid into the tank then add water. Leave about a third of the tank empty to make space for pressure buildup. If you’re using abrasive chemicals, it’s recommended to wear protective gloves or goggles before performing this step.

Step 3. Pressurize the tank

The first thing you should do is screw the top back on the tank. Then, pump the handle up and down to build pressure. Stop when it becomes difficult to push back down. Lock the handle in place by twisting it or pushing, depending on the sprayer you have.

Step 4. Adjust the nozzle

This step allows you to modify the spray to fit your needs and reduce product wastage. Adjust the nozzle to get a wider coverage fan spray or a precise and targeted stream.

Step 5. Apply the product

Apply the solution to your lawn or garden by pulling the trigger on the nozzle. Walk backward in strips to make sure that you don’t miss a spot during application. Move the nozzle sideways to apply the product at a wider span and to cover the overlaps between each row. Make use of a ladder if you have to spray on an area above your head to prevent chemicals from coming into contact with your eyes and skin. It’s also advised to avoid spraying on a windy day as the chemicals could get on areas you don’t want it to reach.

Step 6. Refill the tank

If you run out of solution before finishing the task, it’s important to follow safety refilling practices to avoid injury. Leftover pressure can release and send a spray of liquid directly onto your skin so always make sure to pull the pressure release valve if the sprayer has it. Another key tip is to lean the opening away from your body. Once you’ve successfully opened the tank, repeat the process from step 2.
