How to Deep Clean Your Cabinets

How to Deep Clean Your Cabinets

Chances are if you take a look inside your kitchen cabinets, they could use a good cleaning. From dust build-up to the occasional sauce spill, years of avoiding the clean-up can create an accumulation of mess that doesn’t only look unpleasant, but can also result in health hazards. While it may seem like a tough job, using the right tools and equipment will make your deep cleaning task a simple one.

What You’ll Need:

1.       Vacuum cleaner

2.       Bucket

3.       Disinfecting Agent

4.       Sponge

5.       Plastic Scrubbing Pad

6.       Rag or Mop

The Steps:

Identify your cabinet material. This is an essential step in determining the exact tools and cleaning agents you might need for your cabinets. For instance, Thermofoil might not react well to detergents with acetone and thinner while Melamine cabinets can be more prone to scratching so rough sponges and brushes must be avoided. The right products will not only protect your cabinets, but will also speed up the cleaning process.

Do a thorough clear out. Grab any box or container that can hold all the items inside your cabinets so you can have a clear work area.

Power up your vacuum cleaner. Suck out all the loose debris from inside the cabinets. Make use of the crevice nozzle that comes with your vacuum so you can get into tough corners. Brush out any remaining dust and dirt particles that were not picked up by the vacuum.

Get cleaning. Fill a bucket with warm water and a cup of the suitable disinfecting agent. Use a sponge and a plastic scrubbing pad to gently wash the interiors, exteriors, and everything in between using your cleaning solution. For a deeper and more efficient clean, you may choose to let the mixture sit on the surface before scrubbing.

Don’t forget about your handles. Your cabinet handles, knobs, and pulls regularly come in contact with your hands, so it’s important to give these hardware a thorough clean too. Similar to your cabinets, it’s important to know the material so you can find the right cleaning agent. For metal hardware, you can make a solution of equal parts water and vinegar or use a dedicated cleaning product.

Wipe off the solution. Use a damp rag to get rid of the soapy mixture. Then, allow your cabinets to dry completely before storing and reorganizing your items.

It is recommended to deep clean your cabinets once every 3 months to prevent excessive build-up of stubborn dirt, grime, and harmful contaminants. You can also use this time as the perfect opportunity to toss out expired food left unnoticed or to donate utensils and other tableware that you no longer use.
